Safelight Labs is a film photography lab and used camera shop on Adams Avenue in Normal Heights, San Diego, at 2701 Adams Avenue in the 92116 ZIP. Co-founded in 2019 by Rob Cowan and Caitie Boreliz, the business started as a community darkroom before acquiring Camera Exposure, a decades-old camera shop on the same block, in 2020. The retail floor carries used and vintage film cameras including SLRs, rangefinders, medium-format bodies, and point-and-shoot models, alongside lenses, filters, and fresh film stocks from Kodak, Fujifilm, Ilford, and CineStill, with particular demand for Nikon AI/AI-S and Canon FD mount lenses. A fully equipped rental studio at the back of the space starts at $40 per hour and hosts portrait sessions, product shoots, and workshops taught by photographers including Skyrider Photography. The lab processes C-41 color, black-and-white, E-6 slide, and ECN-2 motion picture film stocks, with standard turnaround of two to four days and a rush option that delivers scans within 24 hours for up to five rolls of C-41. Scanned images are delivered via WeTransfer at no additional charge, and the lab prints on Fujicolor Crystal Archive Paper with lustre finish through a local printing partnership. Cowan, who started shooting film in the 1990s, still uses a Canon Rebel 2000 with a 50mm f/1.8 lens, while Boreliz runs day-to-day operations with a Canon AE-1 as her everyday camera. The Adams Avenue location puts Safelight Labs at the heart of the Normal Heights creative corridor, where the annual Adams Avenue Street Fair and Adams Avenue Unplugged acoustic festival bring thousands of visitors past the storefront. Event photographers working with production companies including San Diego Life Events use the lab for same-week processing of documentary and candid coverage shot on film. An after-hours drop box outside the shop accepts film submissions when the store is closed, and a mail-in service extends processing to clients outside San Diego.
