About

Little While is the first stand-alone coffee roastery and bakery from the Sweet & Savory Collective, the San Diego group behind Pop Pie Co. and Stella Jean's Ice Cream, now operating at 3019 Adams Ave in Normal Heights in the 92116 ZIP. Co-founder Steven Torres and Executive Chef Gan Suebsarakham opened the cafe in fall 2025 in the former Hawthorn Coffee space, installing a Stronghold S9X roaster for in-house bean production and a La Marzocco Linea PB espresso machine with integrated scales on the bar. The pastry program uses Isigny French butter across a globally inspired lineup of croissants, morning buns, and layered pastries developed by culinary operations manager Chef Madyson Hodge, and the adjacent dinner concept at Et Voilà! French Bistro next door shares the same block's French-leaning culinary identity. The 1,200-square-foot interior features natural wood booth seating, wall paneling, a wood-fronted service counter, and globe lighting designed by Tecscape architects and Solstice Interiors. Torres describes the concept as built around life's brief, meaningful pauses — a departure from the technicolor energy of Stella Jean's into a quieter, warm-toned room where pour-over coffee and pastry are the focal point. The pour-over bar rotates through single-origin selections roasted in small batches on the Stronghold, while the espresso program offers classic cortados, flat whites, and lattes pulled on the La Marzocco. Adams Avenue's dining corridor extends the cafe's reach into the lunch hour, with Zia Gourmet Pizza up the block anchoring the midday-to-evening pizza traffic along this stretch of Normal Heights. The Adams Avenue Street Fair and Adams Avenue Unplugged draw annual festival crowds past the storefront, and the cafe's position near the University Heights border puts it within a short walk of Balboa Park via Park Blvd.
