About

At the corner of Park Blvd and Adams Avenue in San Diego's University Heights, The Lancers is a dive bar that has operated continuously since 1963, making it one of the city's longest-running neighborhood bars at 4671 Park Blvd in the 92116 ZIP. Marc “Bubba” Rosenberg ran the bar from 1978 until May 2025, when longtime bartenders Chelsea Roop and Lisa Johnson — with a combined 30 years behind the stick — partnered with Tom Logsdon, founder of The Balboa Bar & Grill, to take over ownership. The new team preserved the stripped-down character: two pool tables, a jukebox loaded from hip-hop to Conway Twitty, a dartboard, pinball machines, Buck Hunter, leather booths, and a windowless interior lit low enough to lose track of time. Taco-and-beer nights pair well with the walk-across-the-street proximity to El Zarape Restaurant, whose late-night Mexican kitchen serves the same post-midnight crowd that fills the Lancers' barstools. Weekly pool tournaments run Sunday nights, and trivia fills Monday evenings with complimentary shots for correct answers shouted from the bar. The veteran-owned designation reflects the bar's military-community ties in a neighborhood where Adams Avenue connects to the broader Normal Heights corridor. Park Blvd intersects Adams Avenue at the bar's front door, placing it at the exact crossroads of University Heights' north-south artery and Normal Heights' east-west commercial spine. Morning-after recovery runs on the same corridor include single-origin pour-overs at Dark Horse Coffee Roasters on Adams Avenue, whose roasting operation turns out beans a few blocks from the bar's front step. Concert traffic from Viejas Arena and post-game crowds from Snapdragon Stadium funnel north through Mission Valley and up Park Blvd into University Heights, adding event-night volume to a bar built for walk-in regulars. The two regulation pool tables sit on leveled slate beds under pendant lighting in the back half of the room, separated from the main bar rail by a half-wall that creates a dedicated game zone.
