About

Inside Diversionary Theatre at 4545 Park Blvd in San Diego's University Heights, The Clark Cabaret & Bar is an LGBTQ+-centered performance bar with a stage, a full liquor program, and a large patio within the 92116 ZIP. Diversionary Theatre, founded in 1986, is the third-oldest LGBTQ+ theater company in the nation and celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2026 with the Ruby Anniversary Ball on Park Blvd. The Clark Cabaret opened in fall 2021, funded in part by a gift from the estate of Dr. Fritz Klein, a longtime Diversionary board member, and features a permanent historical display created in partnership with LAMBDA Archives of San Diego documenting the cultural legacy of the gay bar as a gathering space. Park Blvd restaurants in University Heights include Madi, whose dinner-service hours overlap with the cabaret's pre-show and intermission drink windows on the same corridor. Nightly programming runs the full spectrum of queer performance: DRAGversionary drag shows, Sassy Salon variety nights hosted by Danielle Levsky, Top Shelf Tease burlesque, Big Queer Trivia Night, stand-up comedy, jazz sessions with a resident pianist, and Queer Youth Karaoke produced in partnership with the San Diego Queer Youth Chorus. The cabaret occupies the first-floor space of the Diversionary building, separate from the 106-seat mainstage upstairs, giving it an intimate piano-bar scale that contrasts with the full-production theater above. El Cajon Blvd runs parallel two blocks south, where the Lafayette Hotel marks the eastern edge of the University Heights commercial corridor. Diversionary Theatre anchors the performing-arts identity of the Park Blvd corridor, pulling theater audiences from across the region into University Heights for mainstage productions that run September through June. The cabaret's patio faces Park Blvd with sightlines toward Ward Canyon Park a few blocks north, connecting the theater district to the residential green space that borders Normal Heights. Balboa Park sits directly south of University Heights — Park Blvd runs straight into it — making the cabaret a natural pre- or post-park stop for visitors already on the corridor. The full bar stocks craft cocktails, local draft beer, and wine, and the schedule runs from five through the last performance of the night.
