About

Park & Rec in University Heights occupies a three-bungalow compound at 4612 Park Blvd in San Diego's 92116 ZIP, housing three separate full-service bars, a courtyard with lawn games, and a rear game yard with ping-pong. Owners John Pani and Andy Zlotnik — the team behind Waypoint Public — converted the space from Bourbon Street, a gay bar that operated on the site for nearly 30 years, and launched a cocktail-forward program built around 19 house recipes and 12 beers on tap. The courtyard anchors the layout: corn hole lanes, a dartboard, and a shuffleboard table spread across the open-air yard, while the enclosed garage building adds big-screen TVs, pinball machines, and a third bar rail. In-house food comes from Royale with Cheese, a snack-shack concept serving a Wagyu-beef-patty burger, a 57 Chèvre grilled cheese, and Kootz's Magical Mystery Tots from a dedicated kitchen window — a pairing that sets Park & Rec apart from drink-only bars along the same block as Lestat's on Park up the street. Zagat named the bar to its national “Hottest Bars in 15 U.S. Cities” list within weeks of opening, citing the courtyard and the cocktail program as standouts. Friday nights bring rotating live bands to the main bungalow stage, and weekend DJs keep the courtyard going past midnight. The bar doubles as an official Cal Bears football watch destination, with the garage TVs tuned to Berkeley broadcasts every fall Saturday. Park Blvd runs south from the front door straight into Balboa Park, putting the bar within a five-minute drive of the museums, gardens, and performance spaces that anchor the cultural core of the area. University Heights restaurants within walking distance include the French-leaning tasting menus at Et Voilà! French Bistro, making the block a dinner-then-drinks corridor for the neighborhood. Post-game crowds from Snapdragon Stadium, five to ten minutes south on the 15, spill into University Heights bars along Park Blvd for craft cocktails and late-night rounds. The compound's three bars collectively run 36 pour stations across draft, well, and craft-cocktail tiers, with the courtyard bar handling the highest volume on weekend nights.
