Founded in 2012, Lionel's Legacy Senior Dog Rescue in Lakeside is a volunteer-run, appointment-only adoption and wellness center on Woodside Avenue specializing in dogs aged seven and older. The Free To Chew dental clinic provides low-cost extractions and cleanings for aging dogs, complementing the behavioral socialization work that EZ Pups runs in Alpine for newly adopted companions. The Home Away From HOME program offers temporary foster care for up to 60 days while pet owners recover from illness or hardship, keeping senior dogs out of county shelters. The organization co-founded the San Diego Rescue Coalition, a multi-agency network coordinating intake and placement across Southern California shelters. Veterinary care for foster and adoptable dogs spans vaccinations, bloodwork, and geriatric screening, with Country Pet Hospital on Alpine Blvd receiving referrals for complex geriatric cases that exceed the rescue's on-site clinical scope. In 2025, the rescue placed 55 senior dogs into permanent homes, prepared 2,500 pounds of fresh food for foster animals, and delivered 30 low-cost dental exams through the Free To Chew program.
