About

Oakoasis County Preserve in Lakeside protects roughly 400 acres of coast live oak woodland, chaparral, and manzanita along Wildcat Canyon Road. A marked loop trail of approximately three miles gains and loses 700 feet of elevation before reaching a scenic overlook of San Vicente Reservoir, connecting to the same Trans-County Trail corridor that links El Capitan County Preserve directly across the road. The San Diego County-managed preserve permits leashed dogs and horses on all trails but prohibits mountain bikes, maintaining the singletrack for foot and hoof traffic. A youth-group campsite on the property includes a covered pavilion, tent pads, and an optional cabin, making the preserve one of the few Wildcat Canyon facilities that combines trail access with overnight accommodations alongside Louis A. Stelzer County Park farther south on the same road. The 110-mile Trans-County Trail segment through the preserve is planned to run from Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve on the coast to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park to the east, positioning the Oakoasis trailhead as one of the inland waypoints on the cross-county route.
