The Alpine Historical Society operates the John DeWitt Museum on Tavern Road in Alpine, a one-acre Heritage Park anchored by three relocated 19th-century structures. The 1896 Dr. Sophronia Nichols House — the residence of Alpine's first practicing physician — contains Kumeyaay baskets, pottery, and LaForce Collection photographs, placing it in the same East County heritage-preservation category as Barona Cultural Center & Museum on Barona Road. The 1899 Adam and Caroline Beaty House, built in the I-Design vernacular style of the antebellum Tidewater South, was donated by Ted Christianson in 1998 and moved to the museum grounds. An all-volunteer 501(c)(3), the society holds its monthly programs at the Alpine Women's Club on Alpine Blvd, within walking distance of Janet's Montana Cafe and the surrounding commercial corridor. Permanent exhibits include the original Alpine school bell, the Foss Family collection, and the Arnold display documenting early 20th-century settlement patterns in the Tavern Road area.
