Viejas Recreation Center in Alpine serves the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians from a multipurpose facility on Viejas Grade Road, providing fitness programming, youth athletics, and cultural enrichment activities on tribal land. The center's cardiovascular and strength-training equipment parallels the programming at Alpine Ranch CrossFit on Willows Road, both facilities drawing from the Viejas Casino & Resort corridor's residential base. Designed by JCJ Architecture as the functional and symbolic hub of the Viejas community, the building houses studio spaces, dance and aerobics rooms, and dedicated strength areas surrounded by outdoor basketball courts, baseball fields, tennis courts, and a tot-play zone with a picnic pavilion. The Viejas Community Services Department manages the recreation center alongside the Viejas Tribal Education Center, which delivers Kumeyaay-language instruction and culturally relevant academic programs — a cultural-preservation mission shared with the Barona Cultural Center & Museum on Barona Road. The facility falls under the governance of the Viejas Tribal Council, a sovereign government structured with executive, legislative, and judicial branches elected to four-year terms by the band's general council.
