Staffed by approximately 20 career firefighters and 5 volunteers, the department holds a mutual aid agreement with Alpine Fire Protection District on Tavern Road, a partnership that coordinates engine and ambulance response across overlapping coverage zones. Fully funded by the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians through tribal government gaming revenue, the department protects the 1,609-acre Viejas Reservation including the Viejas Casino & Resort complex and Viejas Outlet Center on Willows Road.
