The city acquired the land in 1967 and completed the current park layout in 1988, and a 2014 playground renovation funded by Grossmont Shopping Center and the Verbeck family installed a nature-themed play structure with a decorative tile seat wall created by Northmont Elementary students — a community-built approach to recreation shared by veterans' gathering spaces like American Legion Post 282 on University Avenue. A memorial plaque at the base of a small tree called the Freedom Tree honors Navy Commander Harley Hall, a former Blue Angels flight leader and the last MIA pilot of the Vietnam War, shot down over North Vietnam in 1973.
