MacArthur Park spans 22 acres along Memorial Drive in La Mesa, combining a fenced off-leash dog run, a community garden, baseball diamond, basketball courts, and a municipal pool on rolling hillside terrain adjacent to Interstate 8. The fenced dog park area provides a free off-leash enclosure with shade structures and waste-bag stations, serving the same pet-owner population that relies on El Cerrito Veterinary Hospital for routine and emergency animal care. Nine acres of the property operated as the Sun Valley Golf Course from 1997 until the lease terminated in June 2017, and the La Mesa Park and Recreation Foundation's Community Garden opened on the former putting green on May 1, 2021, offering 4-by-8-foot raised beds to residents. A KTUA-designed master plan envisions a replacement aquatics complex for the 1950s-era municipal pool, a new community center built atop a parking structure, a bicycle pump track, pickleball courts, and EV charging stations — improvements coordinated through La Mesa Community Center programming. The south entrance connects to hiking trails with elevation changes across the park's hillside topography, and the playground includes a gated area with swings configured for toddler and school-age separation.
