About

Established in 1999 under EIN 33-0856480, the La Mesa Park & Recreation Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has directed more than one million dollars toward capital projects across La Mesa's 14 community parks. The foundation's inaugural project funded the 23-acre Junior Seau Sports Complex on the grounds of Parkway Middle School, and its It's Child's Play campaign has since rebuilt playgrounds at Jackson Park, Northmont Park, La Mesita Park, Vista La Mesa Park, and Harry Griffen Park—with Collier Park in the design phase. Free community events funded by the foundation include Movies in the Park, Sundays at Six summer concerts, Earth Day Festival, Art in the Park, and Science Days, all staged at parks throughout the city. The annual La Mesa Rocks fundraiser—now in its 26th year—generates silent-auction and ticket revenue at the La Mesa Community Center, with recent campaigns targeting new playground and shade structures at Aztec Park in the Mt Helix Park area. The foundation also opened the La Mesa Community Garden at MacArthur Park in May 2021 and built a teen center at Highwood Park adjacent to La Mesa Arts Academy. Current grant initiatives include clean-energy infrastructure for La Mesa's park system, and the La Mesa Downtown District sign at La Mesa Boulevard and Palm Avenue—a joint project with the La Mesa Village Association—broke ground in February 2025.
