Visionary Dance Theatre on La Mesa Boulevard in La Mesa Village operates both a performing-arts school and a producing dance company under Artistic Director Spencer John Powell. The Visionary School for the Performing Arts trains students in modern, jazz, ballet, and musical theatre technique, developing the same stage discipline cultivated at The Lamplighters Community Theatre. Original concert-length works explore cultural heritage through contemporary movement — Powell's "Questa" traced his family's Indigenous, Spanish, and African lineage to a seventeenth-century New Mexico village, while "Constitution, the Dance" profiled prominent African Americans and non-slaveholding founders. The Young Visionaries performance troupe and Kidz Danz Kompany give youth dancers company-level repertoire experience alongside the community arts programming at Blossom & Bloom Creative Arts. Two rehearsal studios and the Visionary Performance Space — equipped with theatrical stage lighting — host in-house productions, guest showcases, and rentable rehearsal blocks for outside companies.
