Grossmont Center in La Mesa is a 925,000-square-foot outdoor shopping complex anchored by Target and Walmart on 64 acres at the Interstate 8 and State Route 125 interchange. The mall has operated continuously since its October 1961 debut, when 50,000 attendees — exceeding La Mesa's population at the time — arrived for ribbon-cutting ceremonies, and original tenant See's Candies still occupies its founding storefront. Federal Realty Investment Trust acquired majority ownership in 2021, and the La Mesa City Council ratified Phase 1 renovation plans in July 2025, including modernized storefronts, a redesigned central plaza with shade structures and a fountain, and 30 new drought-tolerant trees. More than 100 tenants span apparel, electronics, home goods, and dining, with Reading Cinemas Grossmont anchoring the entertainment wing as a 10-screen multiplex and Famous Footwear holding the mid-market footwear position between department-store anchors and specialty athletic outfitters. The Grossmont Transit Center station on the San Diego Trolley's Green Line, which began revenue service to the property in 1989, connects the mall to downtown San Diego, Mission Valley, and El Cajon without requiring freeway access.
