About

Rick's Custom Framing has occupied La Mesa Boulevard since 1979, providing museum-grade conservation framing and art restoration across San Diego County. Archival mounting uses acid-free linen hinges, 100-percent cotton rag matboard, and UV-filtering glazing to preserve original oils, watercolors, and works on paper, the same preservation standard that local artists at Studio Carla specify when preparing gallery-bound pieces. The workshop builds hand-carved period frames, French mats, and gold-leaf and silver-leaf profiles in-house, drawing on a woodworking tradition rooted in the founder's Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Printmaking from San Diego State University. A rotating gallery in the showroom, branded Gallery La Mesa, exhibits contemporary paintings, photography, printmaking, and sculpture, providing exhibition space for emerging and mid-career artists alongside the framing operation. Shadowbox construction accommodates three-dimensional objects including military medals, textiles, and preserved botanical arrangements, a specialty display format that extends to the dried-flower and event-floral keepsakes from 96 Flowers & 13 Stems. The facility specializes in Tru Vue Optium Museum Acrylic and Conservation Clear glazing for oversize works, paired with custom-milled hardwood and burl moulding profiles not stocked by chain-retail frame operations.
