UC San Diego Health Hillcrest Emergency Department

About

San Diego County's only academic Level 1 Trauma Center and one of just four Licensed Comprehensive Emergency Departments in the State of California, UC San Diego Health Hillcrest Emergency Department operates a 36-bed emergency floor at 200 W Arbor Drive in 92103 handling approximately 60,000 patient visits per year. Complex urologic presentations — obstructing kidney stones, acute urinary retention, post-traumatic genitourinary injuries — route from the emergency floor to specialty follow-up with Unio Specialty Care – Urology – San Diego – Hillcrest once patients are stabilized and discharged. Dedicated imaging includes an in-department 360-slice CT scanner, point-of-care X-ray, and a contiguous MRI suite, supporting the hospital's role as an acute cardiac STEMI receiving center, Comprehensive Stroke Center, and the designated San Diego County Base Station for prehospital EMS oversight. Post-acute discharges — burn recovery patients finishing skin graft care, stroke patients completing inpatient rehab, elderly trauma patients transitioning out of the ICU — step down to skilled nursing facilities in the neighborhood including Balboa Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for continued wound care, physical therapy, and medication management. The San Diego Regional Burn Center housed inside Hillcrest Medical Center — the only regional burn center serving San Diego and Imperial counties — accepts adult burn transfers for excision, split-thickness skin grafting, and hyperbaric oxygen adjunct care, representing the highest-acuity case mix the emergency department triages before transferring upstairs to the burn unit.
