Founded in 2002, Dermatology and Laser Center of San Diego operates from Suite 209 at 4060 Fourth Avenue with Dr. Erick Mafong handling Mohs micrographic surgery for skin cancer alongside dermatologic and laser procedures. Mafong trained at NYU Medical Center as chief resident before completing a Mohs and laser fellowship at the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of New York, and he practices alongside Dr. Amy Han within the same group in the Fourth Avenue medical corridor. Consultations run in English and Spanish, opening the clinic to bilingual Hillcrest residents for skin cancer screenings, biopsy workup, and layer-by-layer tumor excision. As an Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the UC San Diego School of Medicine and a staff physician at the San Diego VA Medical Center, Mafong also trains residents and veterans while running the Hillcrest clinic schedule with partner Mark A. Willoughby, MD. Procedures available on-site include pulsed dye and CO2 laser work, tattoo removal, cryosurgery, Botox and filler injections, and electronic brachytherapy for non-melanoma skin cancers. The signature workflow pairs same-day Mohs excision with immediate reconstructive closure for aggressive basal and squamous cell carcinomas on the face, ears, and scalp where tissue preservation drives the surgical plan.
