About

Operating under California Community Care Licenses #376600283 and #376600285 with an 82-child capacity, St. Paul's Child Care Program runs one of Southern California's first intergenerational daycare models on its Bankers Hill campus, enrolling children from eight weeks through five years old. The program was launched in 1997 as a ministry extension of the founding Episcopal parish at St Paul's Episcopal Cathedral, placing the children's classrooms and the Senior Day Program inside the same building. Children join seniors twice each school day and at lunch for shared activities including reading, arts and crafts, sing-alongs, and dancing, a continuous-contact model rarer than the weekly or monthly schedules used at other intergenerational sites. Storytime and movement sessions draw on performance content similar to what staging groups like Looking Glass Theatre bring to children's audiences across San Diego. The most distinctive track is the pre-kindergarten room, whose graduates show documented gains in empathy, patience, and self-control over peers in age-segregated preschools, a result researchers attribute to sustained senior contact.
