About

The Rehabilitation Services suite in the L411 lower-level wing of UC San Diego Health Hillcrest at 200 W Arbor Dr in 92103 operates as the inpatient acute rehabilitation gym serving the academic medical center's surgical, neurology, and trauma services. Acute therapy here begins bedside in the ICU and step-down units, transitioning patients into the L411 gym for early ambulation, gait training with assistive devices, and pre-discharge functional assessment that determines whether the next step is home, acute inpatient rehab, or skilled nursing — with discharge often coordinated to facilities such as Hillcrest Heights Healthcare Center on Front Street. Therapists working the L411 floor are credentialed in acute neurologic rehabilitation, cardiopulmonary rehab, and early post-operative orthopedic mobilization. Inpatient rehab plans are built alongside UCSD physiatry consults and attending hospitalists including Dr. James E. Bush, MD for medically complex admissions. The most demanding caseload involves polytrauma patients arriving from the regional trauma system who require simultaneous orthopedic, neurologic, and burn-related rehabilitation while still on the surgical floors.
