About

Founded in 1975 as a 501(c) nonprofit, the Taoist Sanctuary of San Diego teaches Chen-style Taijiquan and Qi Gong from a Park Boulevard facility whose senior instructors hold 6th Duan Wei certifications awarded by the Chinese Wushu Association at Chenjiagou in 2011. Senior teachers are 20th-generation indoor disciples of Grandmaster Chen Xiaowang, the 19th-generation lineage holder of Chen Family Taijiquan, a direct Chen lineage that places the school in a distinctly different tradition from the hatha and vinyasa programming at Honeybee Hive Yoga. Beginning students learn the Laojia Yi Lu form — the original long form of Chen Taijiquan — through outdoor class blocks at Morley Field, Chollas Lake, and the SDUSD parking lot, with indoor Qi Gong held inside the Park Boulevard sanctuary itself. Regular seminars with traveling Chen-family masters from Chenjiagou, Germany, and the United Kingdom extend the Sanctuary's teaching lineage well beyond the local instructor roster and keep the curriculum tied to the source village. Traditional Chinese Healing practice runs alongside the martial instruction, with in-house tui na bodywork extending the therapeutic reach and complementing the spinal adjustment work at Inner Balance Institute. Advanced curriculum adds Cannon Fist, push-hands, and traditional weapons — spear, saber, and straight sword — forms that require years of foundational study and make up the deepest-progression track at the school.
