About

Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at UC San Diego, Walter H. Kaye, MD founded the UCSD Eating Disorders Center for Treatment and Research and has authored more than 400 publications on anorexia and bulimia nervosa. The clinical program he built, headquartered at 200 West Arbor Drive in Hillcrest, runs partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and family-based treatment tracks coordinated with community specialty practices including Eating Disorder & OCD Therapy San Diego for step-down and continuing care. Dr. Kaye adapted Family-Based Treatment, originally developed at the Maudsley in London, to the partial-hospital level of care and co-developed Temperament-Based Treatment to tailor intervention to each patient's neurobiology. The five-day intensive Family Treatment Program brings out-of-area families to San Diego for compressed Maudsley training paired with comprehensive medical and psychological evaluation. Pediatric and adolescent eating disorder cases are co-managed through the Rady Children's affiliation and with child-psychiatry colleagues including Dr. Tony T. Yang, MD for comorbid mood and anxiety presentations. The most complex protocol currently underway is the Phase 1 open-label psilocybin therapy trial for adult women with anorexia nervosa, the first study of its kind in the field.
