UC San Diego Medical Center: Ophthalmology Department

Eye Care

About

A 434-bed Level I Trauma Center designation places the UC San Diego Medical Center Hillcrest Ophthalmology Department at 200 West Arbor Drive in the highest acuity tier of San Diego eye care. The Eye Clinic operates eight outpatient examination lanes plus a dedicated ophthalmology operating room and an emergency-department exam room reserved for after-hours ocular trauma calls, a hospital-based footprint absent from solo-OD community offices including Marcelline Ciuffreda, O.D. a few blocks east on the same corridor. Ophthalmology consultations cover the neonatal intensive care unit, jail population, and indigent patients alongside scheduled subspecialty clinics in cornea, glaucoma, retina, neuro-ophthalmology, oculoplastics, and pediatric ophthalmology. Ancillary capacity includes ophthalmic photography, visual field testing, OCT, RetCam pediatric imaging, lasers, pachymetry, and ultrasonography all built into the clinic suite. Open-globe injuries, ruptured globes, orbital fractures, and other surgical emergencies route from the trauma bay into the dedicated ophthalmic OR or out to partner facilities including Surgical Specialists Of San Diego when multidisciplinary repair is needed. Penetrating ocular trauma repairs, intraocular foreign-body removals, and complex orbital reconstructions represent the most acute surgical workflow handled through the Hillcrest hospital ophthalmology suite.
