Eye Care

About

Shiley Eye Institute's Hillcrest satellite — part of UC San Diego's only academic eye center, founded in 1991 — operates from Suite 610 of the Mercy Medical building at 4060 Fourth Avenue. The location functions as the Hillcrest-side outpatient arm of the Viterbi Family Department of Ophthalmology, with orbital MRI and CT workups for thyroid eye disease and ocular oncology cases coordinated through hospital-affiliated diagnostic providers including Imaging Healthcare Specialists - Hillcrest on the same medical corridor. Subspecialty clinics rotated through the Hillcrest office cover comprehensive ophthalmology, cornea and cataracts, dry eye, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, retina and vitreous, oculoplastics, and pediatric ophthalmology. Some surgical cases route to UC San Diego operating rooms while others go through community ambulatory surgery groups including Pacific Coast Surgical Group when insurance routing or scheduling calls for an outpatient setting. Residents from the UCSD Department of Ophthalmology rotate through this clinic alongside attending faculty, building the academic teaching pipeline that distinguishes Shiley from community private practices. Complex orbital tumor workups, ocular oncology consultations, and inherited retinal disease genetic counseling represent the highest-complexity care delivered through the Suite 610 exam lanes.
