Hillcrest Brewing Company Bar & Pizzeria at 1458 University Ave opened in June 2012 as the first openly LGBTQ brewery in the world. The brewpub sits below the iconic Hillcrest Pride Flag and shares the neighborhood's pizza corridor with Bronx Pizza, one of Hillcrest's highest-volume slice shops. A scratch kitchen produces hand-tossed stone-fired pizzas, house-made dough, sauces, and dressings alongside marinated oven-baked wings and Italian-style meatballs. The brewpub sits below the world's first openly LGBTQ brewery operation, pouring house-brewed IPAs, stouts, and lagers alongside a full Neapolitan pizza program on the same Hillcrest corridor as Starlite's craft cocktail bar. The bar pours 24 rotating taps that spotlight independent San Diego breweries, pairing hyper-local draft lists with its full stone-oven menu for large-format group orders and private event buyouts.
