About

Incorporated in 1984 and working exclusively as laboratory design consultants, Research Facilities Design (RFD) has delivered more than one thousand lab projects across the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Malaysia, Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, and Egypt. The Fifth Avenue studio programs and designs laboratory buildings for biomedical, bioscience, physical science, engineering, and nanotechnology research — a specialty scope that complements broader institutional firms such as Architects Magnus. Current San Diego work includes the new San Diego County Public Health Laboratory in collaboration with Steinberg Hart, a public-sector facility designed around BSL-2 and BSL-3 containment standards and emergency response requirements. Campus laboratory projects include coordination with surrounding buildings, loading-dock placement for hazardous material deliveries, and exterior mechanical yard screening — site integration work resolved alongside institutional landscape architects such as McCullough Landscape Architecture, Inc.. RFD's Design Development document sets are unusually detailed, often exceeding what most firms produce at Construction Document stage, to resolve fume hood layouts, gas and vacuum service runs, HVAC pressure cascades, and biocontainment envelopes before bidding. The firm's most complex delivery is BSL-3 containment and vivarium facilities, where animal care protocols, directional airflow, HEPA filtration, effluent decontamination, and emergency power all have to integrate with active research programming.
