About

Leichtag Foundation at 441 Saxony Road in Encinitas has granted more than $140 million to over 391 organizations since becoming an independent private foundation in late 2007, honoring the legacy of founders Lee and Toni Leichtag through investments in vibrant Jewish life, agricultural innovation, and social entrepreneurship. The foundation owns and operates the 67.5-acre Leichtag Commons, a platform for social change that hosts The Hive coworking and event space alongside the agricultural programs supplied by nurseries including Barrels & Branches on Leucadia Boulevard. Grantmaking priorities span coastal North San Diego County and Jerusalem, targeting food-systems development, Holocaust education, democracy building, and scholarship endowments through a modified limited-life plan designed to deploy remaining assets with urgency. Jewish-life programming supports congregations, educational institutions, and cultural organizations across the region, reinforcing the communal infrastructure anchored by Temple Solel and other Encinitas-area synagogues. Highest-impact initiatives include the Coastal Roots Farm pay-what-you-can farm-stand model, which distributes over 100,000 pounds of produce annually while integrating Jewish agricultural traditions into a community-education framework on the Leichtag Commons campus.
