Housed in Encinitas's oldest church building — a 1908 structure on Third Street one block from the Pacific — Chapel of Awareness has operated as a spiritualist congregation since its founding on Christmas Eve 1972. Weekly practice integrates Buddhist Zazen meditation with clairaudient and healing sessions, a contemplative format that complements the mindfulness-based movement instruction at Soul of Yoga on the same Encinitas spiritual-practice corridor. The Golden Thread philosophy, the Chapel's central tenet, teaches that a unifying truth runs through all religions and spiritual traditions — from Christianity and Buddhism to esoteric metaphysics — without imposing doctrinal exclusivity on attendees. Beginning and advanced development classes in spiritual awareness, psychic perception, and trance mediumship extend the curriculum beyond Sunday gatherings, placing the Chapel within Encinitas's contemplative corridor alongside the Self-Realization Fellowship Meditation Gardens less than a mile south along Coast Highway 101. The original 1908 sanctuary retains its oak pews and arched beam ceiling, accommodating approximately 50 attendees in a worship space that has served continuously under three distinct religious traditions across more than a century of use.
