Modern Times Far West Lounge at 470 South Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas's Old Encinitas district is the North County pub outpost of Modern Times Beer, a San Diego brewery that brewed its first batch in Point Loma in May 2013. The Far West Lounge pours 30-plus taps alongside guest beers and wines, operating within a craft-beer corridor on the 101 that includes Culture Brewing a few blocks south. The pub opened in October 2018 with a self-described mid-century maximalist interior designed by the brewery's in-house art team, featuring custom light fixtures, abstract wall installations, and a 40-seat central bar. A full kitchen serves both plant-based and non-plant-based comfort fare — including flatbreads, sandwiches, and brunch plates — and the adjacent mini-mart stocks canned and bottled beer to go, Modern Times Coffee, and vinyl records from Vinyl Record Rarities. Modern Times became California's first employee-owned brewery in 2017, and the company also roasts its own coffee — a dual-craft identity shared with Ironsmith Coffee Roasters down the 101. The draft system rotates between the brewery's flagship West Coast IPAs, bourbon-barrel-aged imperial stouts with macadamia nut and coconut adjuncts, and limited small-batch hazy IPAs fermented at the Point Loma production facility.
