About

San Diego Opera in downtown San Diego has produced staged opera from its A Street administrative offices since the company's 1965 incorporation, earning a top-ten ranking from OPERA America among U.S. opera companies. Main-stage productions fill the 2,967-seat San Diego Civic Theatre on Third Avenue, while smaller-scale works and holiday concerts rotate through Balboa Theatre's 1,339-seat Gaslamp Quarter house and alternative venues across the county. The company's education arm reaches 100,000 schoolchildren annually across San Diego County and Northern Mexico through its Operation: Opera program, one of the most extensive opera-outreach initiatives in North America. The San Diego Symphony has provided the pit orchestra for every main-stage production since 2005, pairing the opera's vocal casting with a full symphonic ensemble of 82-plus musicians—the same roster heard in San Diego Symphony's own subscription concerts at Jacobs Music Center. The most complex productions mount full grand-opera stagings—multi-act works with chorus, orchestra, soloists, projected supertitles, and large-scale scenic builds—filling the Civic Theatre's 56-foot proscenium for repertoire that has included commissioned world premieres alongside standard Puccini and Verdi.
