With fellowship training in hematology and oncology and an MPH from UC Berkeley, Joseph Caperna, MD operates an independent internal medicine practice at 2333 First Avenue in downtown San Diego's Bankers Hill. HIV primary care has anchored the clinical mission since 1992, with antiretroviral therapy monitoring, PrEP counseling, and STI screening supported by custom-compounded medication fulfillment through Remedy Holistic Pharmacy in the downtown corridor. Dr. Caperna graduated from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1990, completed internal medicine residency at UC San Diego Medical Center in 1993, and finished a hematology/oncology fellowship at UCSD in 1998, where he served as Clinical Professor of Medicine until 2013. The 1998 UCSD Humanitarian Award recognized his role co-founding a blood bank in Huaraz, Peru, and the 2007 UCSD Diversity Award acknowledged contributions to underserved patient populations in San Diego.
