About

Saville Theatre in downtown San Diego's East Village anchors San Diego City College's dramatic arts program with a full proscenium stage at the corner of 14th and C Streets. The college's five annual productions — including one musical scored for live orchestral accompaniment — feed into the same pipeline of young San Diego performers that San Diego Junior Theatre cultivates in Balboa Park. An annual Festival of New Plays stages world-premiere scripts written and directed entirely by City College students, a development model that has drawn recognition from local theater educators. A secondary Black Box Theatre in the adjacent AH Building handles smaller-scale experimental work and showcases for student designers, a flexible format similar to the programming at Tenth Avenue Arts Center nearby. Outside companies such as San Diego Dance Theater rent the Saville's main house for multi-night repertory concerts and commissioned premieres. Fully staged musicals with live pit orchestras, fly-system rigging, and student-built sets represent the program's most technically demanding productions each semester.
