About

ICA San Diego / Central in downtown San Diego's Balboa Park traces its institutional lineage to the San Diego Art Institute, chartered in 1941, and merged in 2020 with Encinitas-based Lux Art Institute to form a two-campus contemporary art nonprofit on El Prado. The curatorial program stages approximately eleven exhibitions per year spotlighting artists working between Los Angeles and Tijuana across media including site-specific installation, social practice, and experimental new media, sharing the Plaza de Panama corridor with the Timken Museum of Art. ICA's Valise Project, a mobile arts outreach running since 1999, delivers artist-led curricula to Title I classrooms countywide, while on-campus programming includes ceramics workshops, mixed-media classes, and an Education Hub at the Balboa Park campus. Exhibition openings, artist talks, and multigenerational Family Days extend the gallery calendar into community events coordinated with neighboring cultural venues such as the Casa del Prado Theatre. The institution's most ambitious format is its solo museum exhibition series, which commissions mid-career artists to develop new bodies of work at institutional scale for the first time.
