About

San Diego Children's Park in downtown San Diego's Marina District sits on two acres of Harbor Drive frontage directly across from the San Diego Convention Center, anchoring the Martin Luther King Promenade. A $9 million renovation completed through the city's Development Impact Fee program rebuilt the park around its original Civic Pond while adding a 9,500-square-foot treehouse-style wood playground, a fenced dog park, adult fitness stations, and a vendor building that complements the interactive exhibits at the adjacent The New Children's Museum. The Civic Pond boardwalk lets visitors cross over the water feature that has been a park signature since the original design was installed in 1995 under a Redevelopment Agency initiative. Community recreation infrastructure includes foosball tables, ping pong, cornhole, and chess/checkers stations around the pond perimeter, adding structured-play options that parallel the programming at San Diego Central Library a few blocks north. The park's most complex built element is the multi-level wood climbing sculpture, an enclosed play structure with integrated slides, climbing holds, and elevated walkways designed for ages five and up, all set on impact-absorbing rubber surfacing inside a fully gated perimeter.
