About

Third Avenue Charitable Organization in downtown San Diego — known as TACO — has operated as a 501(c)(3) (EIN 33-0711272) on Third Avenue since emerging from a free-lunch program at First Lutheran Church more than thirty years ago. The organization's A-rated kitchen produces over 600 meals per week sourced through San Diego Food Bank and Feeding San Diego, anchoring a daily food-access point in a neighborhood where the broader food-security landscape is tracked by the San Diego Hunger Coalition. More than 1,300 individuals use TACO's Third Avenue address as their own mailing address, receiving Social Security checks, court documents, insurance paperwork, and personal letters — a postal lifeline that the organization sorts and distributes at a rate of roughly 180 pieces per day. UCSD Medical School, the Predental Society of San Diego, and California Western School of Law rotate through on-site clinics providing medical, dental, ophthalmological, and legal services to clients without health coverage at no cost. Legal-aid volunteers assist with general relief applications, food-stamp enrollment, disability filings, and vital-document recovery — services that complement the broader pro bono caseload handled by the San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program downtown. TACO's most resource-intensive program is its twice-monthly shower operation, which deploys a custom trailer on-site to deliver more than 100 hot showers per session to clients who have no other access to bathing facilities.
