Reality Changers in downtown San Diego's East Village prepares first-generation college students from underrepresented backgrounds through a three-tiered academic model that begins in eighth grade and extends through college graduation and career placement. The nonprofit relocated its Education Center in 2023 to the campus of Urban Discovery Academy at 1400 Park Boulevard, integrating its after-school programming with UDA's design-thinking curriculum under a formal partnership. Since its founding in 2001, the program's graduates have earned more than $140 million in scholarship funding to institutions including Brown, Stanford, Harvard, and UCSD, with 29 alumni receiving Gates Millennium Scholarships. College Town and College Apps Academy — the organization's two flagship programs — combine SAT prep, public-speaking drills, financial-aid navigation, and mentorship from volunteer business mentors on program nights each week. The Park Boulevard campus sits within what the organization calls a Downtown Education Corridor that includes San Diego High School, San Diego City College, and the UCSD Park & Market facility, creating a pipeline from middle school through community college and four-year transfer. The program's most intensive track assigns each twelfth-grader a dedicated mentor for individualized college-application coaching, financial-aid package comparison, and campus-fit evaluation — a level of one-on-one guidance that produced $12.8 million in scholarship awards for the Class of 2024 alone.
