About

Invisible Children in downtown San Diego is a nonprofit founded in 2004 to combat mass violence and child abductions by Joseph Kony's Lord's Resistance Army across Central Africa, headquartered at 1620 Fifth Avenue. The organization co-produces documentary films with Central African filmmakers at studios like OAZ Entertainment and NOVO, screening them through a Mobile Cinema program that has reached more than 150,000 people—a grassroots storytelling model that parallels the community screening work at Media Arts Center San Diego. Advocacy campaigns launched from the Fifth Avenue office have helped secure over $40 million in U.S. government humanitarian assistance to LRA-affected communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, and South Sudan. On the ground, Invisible Children operates early-warning radio networks in more than 165 remote communities and has provided focused trauma counseling to over 2,700 conflict survivors, complementing the local youth intervention work of organizations like the San Diego Youth Coalition. The nonprofit's most complex ongoing operation is its community-based defection and reunification program, which has facilitated the peaceful return and family reintegration of dozens of former LRA fighters, including senior commanders.
