About

House of Finland in downtown San Diego's Balboa Park operates from a cottage at 655 Pan American Place as a nonprofit member of the House of Pacific Relations International Cottages, preserving Finnish cultural heritage near the San Diego Zoo. The organization showcases traditional Finnish crafts, Kalevala mythology displays, and Sami indigenous art alongside the studio artists working in neighboring Spanish Village Art Center on the same El Prado corridor. Weekend programming introduces visitors to Finnish traditions including sauna culture, Midsummer celebrations, and Independence Day observances rooted in the country's 1917 sovereignty. The cottage's permanent exhibits feature Marimekko textile design, Iittala glasswork, and traditional kantele instruments, and HPR lawn programs stage Finnish folk performances at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion—the same venue maintained by the Spreckels Organ Society for its weekly concert series. House of Finland's most intensive annual undertaking is coordinating its full cultural lawn program with live folk ensembles, Finnish cuisine demonstrations, and educational workshops for park audiences numbering in the hundreds.
