About

House of Czech and Slovak Republics in downtown San Diego's Balboa Park is a nonpartisan, nonprofit cultural organization established in 1935 as a founding member of the House of Pacific Relations International Cottages. The cottage at 2170 Pan American Plaza displays handmade Bohemian and Slovak kroj costumes, traditional ceramics, and folk art, with weekend programming coordinated through the shared scheduling infrastructure at the House of Pacific Relations - Hall of Nations. Annual cultural lawn programs feature brass ensembles, folklore dance groups like Podkovicka and Karička, and traditional Czech foods including koláčky and potato salad. The organization also hosts October Czech National Day celebrations with performances of both Czech and Slovak national anthems, documenting immigrant heritage that dovetails with the regional archival collections at the San Diego History Center nearby in the park. Its most complex programming involves multi-day cultural festivals coordinating live music, craft vendors, and traditional cooking demonstrations across the Pan American Plaza grounds near the San Diego Zoo.
