About

Heikoff IMAX Dome in downtown San Diego's Balboa Park houses the world's first IMAX Dome theater, a format pioneered inside the Fleet Science Center when the facility opened in 1973 near the San Diego Zoo. The 76-foot tilted dome screen sits within Fleet Science Center's main building at 1875 El Prado, where IMAX documentary films, digital planetarium shows, and full-dome educational programs share the calendar with over 100 interactive science exhibits across eight galleries. A 2012 renovation installed the world's first NanoSeam dome surface inside an IMAX theater alongside a 16,000-watt digital surround-sound system and IMAX laser projection, producing crystal-clear images nearly eight stories tall on a seamless hemispheric screen. Monthly planetarium programs hosted by the center's astronomer-in-residence map the current night sky, followed by outdoor telescope viewing with the San Diego Astronomy Association — a hands-on complement to the earth-science programming at nearby San Diego Natural History Museum. Private dome screenings accommodate corporate presentations, immersive film premieres, and full-dome digital art installations projected across the entire 76-foot hemispheric surface.
