Nonna + Zucchero

Italian & Pizza

About

Nonna + Zucchero in downtown San Diego's Little Italy occupies the 1735 India Street space where the Busalacchi family's Trattoria Fantastica first served the neighborhood in 1995, rebranded under a Sicilian-comfort concept in 2017. Stone-oven pizzas and house-made Sicilian pastas—rigatoni with Italian sausage, capers, olives, and chiles in marinara; stuffed shells with oyster mushrooms and mascarpone in vodka cream—share the menu with the sibling kitchen at Barbusa, the Busalacchi group's modern Italian spot around the corner. The integrated Zucchero pastry counter produces sfogliatelle, cannoli, and gelato on-site, turning the 5,000-square-foot indoor-outdoor space into a single-stop Italian cafe and trattoria. Two patios—one streetside on India, one sheltered in back—seat roughly 60 guests for brunch, lunch, or dinner service. Catering and full-restaurant buyouts accommodate rehearsal dinners and corporate events built around family-style Sicilian spreads with tableside wine pairings, a format distinct from the seated gelato-flight tastings at Bobboi Natural Gelato down the block.
