About

Library Foundation SD in downtown San Diego's East Village has channeled more than $120 million in private funding to all 37 branches of the San Diego Public Library since its founding as a 501(c)(3) in 2002 (EIN 33-0959608). The foundation's headquarters occupy the fourth floor of the San Diego Central Library at Joan & Irwin Jacobs Common on Park Boulevard, where it also curates a flagship art gallery spotlighting local visual artists and cultural exhibitions. Revenue from the foundation's Library Shop — an independent bookstore stocked with curated titles inside the Central Library — cycles directly into system-wide programming for literacy, work readiness, and digital-skills training across all 37 branches. Family-oriented cultural programming funded by the foundation runs in the same East Village corridor as the hands-on installations at The New Children's Museum, building a walkable education loop near Petco Park. The foundation's largest capital initiative backed the construction of the Central Library itself — a multi-story landmark on Park Boulevard near Petco Park that opened in 2013 as the biggest public library facility in the San Diego system.
