About

Alpha Project - Food Distribution Center in downtown San Diego distributes emergency food supplies from Market Street as the front-line outlet of a nonprofit founded in 1986. The center provides weekday meal service and grocery pickup with Spanish-language assistance and clothing-donation intake, filling a role in the east-side distribution network that also includes Third Avenue Charitable Organization - Food Distribution Center. Alpha Project earned national recognition as the 185th Presidential Point of Light and now operates programs serving over 4,000 people at any given time, spanning substance-abuse treatment, employment training, mental-health counseling, and transit assistance. Clients entering through the food-distribution intake are routed into wraparound case management—housing navigation, benefits enrollment, and job placement—a multi-service model also deployed by Community Action Partnership for low-income households downtown. The parent organization manages over 900 units of below-market-rate housing, including The Metro's 193-unit complex with on-site computer labs, healthcare access through Family Health Centers of San Diego, and regional transit connections bundled into a single supportive-housing model.
