About

The Early Education Center at San Diego City College in downtown San Diego serves children ages 2.5 through 5 inside a LEED Silver-rated facility on Park Boulevard adjacent to Balboa Park. As a lab school for the college's child development program, the EEC pairs preschool classrooms with training stations where college students observe, interact, and implement developmental theory — a dual-purpose model that shares Head Start enrollment pathways with City College Head Start on the same campus. Parent participation courses enroll caregivers in a child development class with a lab component, turning each drop-off into structured observation of their own children's social, cognitive, and motor milestones. The Neighborhood House Association Head Start partnership embeds NHA staff on site for mental health consultations, vision and dental screenings, and family outreach — layering clinical services onto an academic program that operates within the same Title 5 subsidy system as Aspen Leaf Preschool downtown. Parent participants earn academic credit through child development lab courses, building a career ladder that can lead to California's Child Development Teacher Permit and state-funded teaching positions.
