About

Kamon Craft Cocktail Bar in downtown San Diego's East Village is a 1920s Taishō Roman-inspired Japanese speakeasy that opened in 2023 behind a concealed door inside Asa Bakery at 634 14th Street. The intimate room pairs wood-paneled walls, crystal chandeliers, and vintage furnishings with a cocktail program built on Japanese-made spirits — force-carbonated drinks, clarified preparations like the Tokyo Banana, and hojicha-infused negronis served through a repurposed draft system inherited from the space's previous life as a small brewery, a hidden-bar concept sharing the Gaslamp's speakeasy circuit with Noble Experiment. One of the strongest Japanese whisky selections in San Diego anchors the back bar, complemented by shochu and sake pours rarely found outside dedicated izakayas. A concise food menu of chicken katsu sandwiches, battered octopus balls, and harumaki spring rolls draws on izakaya technique rather than Western bar-snack convention. Guided by the principle of omotenashi — Japanese hospitality that prioritizes anticipating guest needs — the bar staff delivers tableside service with the same craft-forward intentionality practiced in the subterranean cocktail theater at Vin de Syrah in the Gaslamp. Private lounge bookings seat 12, with full buyouts accommodating up to 45 guests under custom open-bar and catered food packages.
