Good Night John Boy

Bars & Pubs

About

Good Night John Boy in downtown San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter is an 11,000-square-foot 1970s disco bar and nightclub that Forward Hospitality Group opened in August 2024 inside the 1890s-era Carriage Works building at 401 G Street. The two-floor layout splits into three bars, an LED dance floor, and a cozy downstairs lounge designed to replicate a grandmother's 1970s basement — a committed set-design approach to themed nightlife that shares the Gaslamp's underground with the trailer-park kitsch at Trailer Park After Dark on Fifth Avenue. Founded in Cleveland in 2021 by Bobby Rutter and Michael Schwartz, the concept now spans six cities including Chicago, Columbus, and St. Petersburg, with San Diego as its first West Coast location. Signature cocktails lean into the theme — the Disco Punch arrives in a collectible disco-ball cup, while the Mood Ring layers 818 Tequila Blanco with cherry limeade and an edible-glitter bomb. A condensed food menu runs nostalgia plays like the Johnny Meal (a cheeseburger with onion ring and proprietary Disco Sauce boxed with fries and a toy) and Fleetwood Mac'n Cheese, pairing retro comfort food with the same era-specific cocktail commitment found at Prohibition Lounge in the Gaslamp. Full-venue buyouts convert all 11,000 square feet — three bars, two floors, and the LED dance floor — into a single private event.
