About

Mee Shim Fine Art in downtown San Diego's Little Italy has occupied the same India Street studio-gallery since 2009, built around the surrealist narrative paintings of Korean-born artist Mee Shim. Shim earned a BFA from Duksung Women's University in Seoul and an MFA from Wayne State University, credentials that place her work in the same contemporary fine-art tier as Adelman Fine Art Gallery on neighboring Kettner Boulevard. The 1943 India Street space doubles as a working studio where Shim paints figurative and landscape compositions on canvas and aluminum, applying a high-saturation palette to explore memory, nature, and subconscious imagery across her Nature, Garden Story, and commissioned portrait series. Fellowships at Vermont Studio Center and Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass, Colorado, and a 2009 selection for the World Championship in Athletics art exhibition in Berlin anchor the work internationally, with Shim's vivid aluminum panels and original canvases frequently sourced by interior designers including Jules Wilson Design Studio for residential installations. The most intensive offering is the custom commission portrait, a multi-sitting process in which Shim photographs, sketches, and paints each subject from life to produce a one-of-a-kind canvas.
