Hubbell & Hubbell in downtown San Diego's Bankers Hill district, near Balboa Park, has pioneered alternative-material construction since 2002, holding USGBC membership since 2003 and California Straw Bale Association membership since 1997. The firm's residential and commercial designs use straw bale, insulated concrete form, adobe, and sprayed-concrete wall systems, with sustainable site grading and native planting coordinated through KDA Landscape Architects. The practice designed and permitted the first straw-bale structure in San Diego County and the first straw-bale commercial building within the City of San Diego, securing approvals by documenting fire-resistance, structural load, and thermal-performance data for agencies unfamiliar with the material. In 2021, the studio delivered the first permitted insulated composite concrete form accessory dwelling unit in the city from its Sixth Avenue office, incorporating a butterfly roof for rainwater collection and a solar-ready structure. Energy-efficient envelope systems in these alternative-material builds require precise electrical integration, a scope the firm coordinates with C & G Engineering, Inc. for panel sizing and conduit routing. The most technically complex project type in the current portfolio is the full custom residence built from recycled expanded-polystyrene insulated concrete forms on boulder-filled hillside sites, requiring custom structural engineering, site-specific grading, and integrated renewable-energy systems.
