DBRDS

Architecture & Design

About

DBRDS in downtown San Diego's Little Italy district is an Australian-born design studio that co-founders established in 2008 after relocating from Sydney to bring Pacific-region planning sensibilities to Southern California's urban-housing market. The firm's entitlement expertise in California density-bonus law and San Diego Municipal Code drives a multifamily pipeline along the India Street corridor, where Carrier Johnson + Culture also advances mid-rise residential and mixed-use towers. DBRDS earned a 2016 PCBC Gold Nugget Grand Award for multifamily housing and a 2017 BIA ICON Award for best architectural design, both recognizing the studio's integration of contemporary massing with neighborhood-scaled street frontages. Construction-document sets bundle landscape-architecture courtyard plans with Title 24 energy-compliance calculations into integrated site packages, coordinating grading and planting details with the urban landscape work that KTU & A Planning and Landscape Architecture delivers on neighboring downtown residential parcels. The studio's largest completed project is the Sentral San Diego flex-stay hotel on Tenth and Island Avenue in the East Village, a tower combining pedestrian-scale brick detailing with undulating upper-level bay windows across a 0.23-acre infill parcel.
