About

San Diego Youth Symphony in downtown San Diego's Balboa Park is a nonprofit founded in 1945, making it the sixth-oldest continuously operating youth orchestra in the United States, headquartered at 1650 El Prado in the Casa del Prado building. The organization operates thirteen orchestras and bands serving over 900 musicians ages 8 to 25 under Artistic Director Sameer Patel, delivering more than 50,000 classroom hours per season across rehearsal and performance programming staged at venues including the Casa del Prado Theatre in the park. The Community Opus Project, now in its second decade, provides tuition-free after-school ensemble instruction at elementary schools across Chula Vista and Southeast San Diego, while the ChIMES early-childhood curriculum introduces music to children from infancy. No student is turned away for inability to pay—the KeyNote Fund covers tuition assistance, instrument loans, repairs, and private lessons for roughly one quarter of families each season, building a cradle-to-college music pipeline alongside fellow Balboa Park youth arts programs like San Diego Civic Youth Ballet. SDYS's most demanding production is its annual season-finale concert featuring the full Symphony Orchestra performing repertoire at a pre-conservatory level in Balboa Park's largest indoor performance halls.
